Pronounced Jah-Nay is definitely one of the better R&B albums of the '90s - unfortunately, this album's success was never repeated, and that was most likely due to lousy marketing and single choices for the duo's sophomore outing, Saturday Night.

Revisiting Zhané's Debut Album, the Perfectly 90s Album, Pronounced Jah-Nay. And though I wasn’t actually up in the club where I could go actively seek out the party that was over here, much less the party that was over there, by the time I got to college, the song’s resonance hadn’t slowed down and it was very much apart of my college experience. But something I didn’t really give much thought to until more recently (and by recently I mean like over a decade ago) was just how fire the album that Hey Mr. DJ helped sell, Pronounced Jah-Nay.
Like Pronounced Jah-Nay itself, let’s kick off with the big hit, ʻHey Mr DJ’, a tune that puts the swing into things, thanks to a handy piano sample snipped from Michael Wycoff’s 1982 club groover ʻLooking Up To You’. R&B moved swiftly on, but Pronounced Jah-Nay, originally released on 15 February 1994 and now given a 2LP reissue, now benefits from a luminous, nostalgic sheen.
Zhané’s music isn’t as exotic as they want you to believe; the grandiose introduction describes it as something you’ve never experienced before; but it is indeed strong, smooth and occasionally infectious. Hey Mister DJ, their hit single from last year’s Roll Wit Tha Flava compilation, is front and center.
