Civilian (Gentle Giant album). Civilian is the eleventh and final studio album by British band Gentle Giant, released in 1980. It was recorded at Sound City Studios in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles with former Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick. Consisting mostly of short rock songs, it is closer to a hard rock sound than the progressive style for which the band is best known. The album also marked a return to Columbia Records in the .
Everything they had ever done up to and including their definitive live document Playing the Fool was seemingly layered with a hundred thousand twists, and damned-near a million parts of an often preposterously overdone musical arrangement. For better and worse, Gentle Giant embodied progressive rock by taking all of its traits, conventions and clich’s, and systematically amplifying them past the point of good sense.
Gentle Giant's live album "Playing The Fool" is a treasure of prog rock at its most exquisite, intricate and whimsical. The sound captured live is quintessential Gentle Giant and almost works as a type of best of the Giant. There is enough variation on offer to make it a worthwhile addition to any collection. The best bits of "Octopus" are here, and tons of medley's and montages of Gentle Giant's inimitable style
Gentle Giant released 11 studio albums and one live album during their career from 1970 to 1980. Gentle Giant's popularity rose again in the 1990s and beyond, as these later releases (and some new compilations and tribute albums) attest. Each of these contains unreleased material from Gentle Giant's lifetime. Numerous collections and greatest hits albums have appeared over the years.
Gentle Giant Format: Vinyl. Never saw this band in concert. This live album proves I missed a lot. The tracklist is excellent, sound quality too. The band plays brilliantly and somehow you can feel the joy of playing. Gentle Giant's music still sounds very strong, it hasn't lost any of it's magic. It's amazing they performed their complex music so well. This is maybe the best live prog album of all times, only some efforts from Magma can compete with this.
