Peter Froundjian's Christmas Piano Music on Sony is an unusual yuletide gift from one of Santa’s nimble-fingered helpers. It would be a fair call to describe eclectically-minded pianist Peter Froundjian as a regular traveller along the by-ways of the repertoire. So keen is he on championing the underplayed, he founded the respected Raritäten der Klaviermusik (Rarities of Piano Music) Festival that has taken place in Husum – that’s in Schleswig-Holstein – every year since 1987. Here, he turns his prodigious programming brain to Christmas music with predictably engaging results. By its very nature the piano is not really an instrument that we associate with Christmas, says Froundjian in his authoritative booklet.
Featuring five world premiere recordings, the album by pianist Peter Froundjian is filled with atmospheric, special Christmas music including rarities by both well and lesser-known composers of Romantic piano music from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Busoni’s Sonatina in diem Nativitatis Christi, the world-premiere recordings of Noël and Pastorale by Ignacy Friedman (1882–1948) and the twelve Pastorales by Charles Koechlin (1867–1950) are all genuine discoveries. The six short variations on the old Northumbrian carol O Dame Get Up and Bake Your Pies by Arnold Bax (1883–1953) strike a folklike tone.

Digital Booklet: Friedman: Piano Transcriptions. Friedman as arranger possesses a skillful touch with orchestral scores, too. The three selections here from Christoph Gluck’s stage works beautifully preserve the open texture of the composer’s orchestral writing. But Friedman can give keyboard originals a symphonic ambience too, as he does in his elaborations of two sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. Perhaps the most timeless selection on the CD is the Siciliano from a Bach flute sonata, which opens the album.
Piano Transcriptions Piano solo Schott. Arranged by Vyacheslav Gryaznov. By Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Done with great taste, in a perfectly simple and straightforward manner, Liszt's piano transcriptions of Bach's organ music became the classic models for all future works in this genre.
