Hollywood Bowl Orchestra (2) Conducted By Eugene Goossens - The Fire Dance (Shellac, 12").
Eugene Goossens was conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra on this occasion. One thing immediately apparent from these recordings is that Goossens liked his tempi fast - the Dvorák Carnival Overture takes off like a shot, and the "Ritual Fire Dance" from Manuel de Falla's El amor brujo is so intense that it's almost scary. The latter work is being readied for its West Coast premiere, and we get a backstage pass as Goossens carefully cajoles a reluctant Bowl orchestra through the rhythmic intricacies of the then unfamiliar score. These priceless treasures were discovered by the late collector William Moran in a charity shop in .
Also included was the very first commercial recording ever made of a symphony orchestra outdoors - the 1928 RCA Victor album with Eugene Goossens conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, made up of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
