Concerto For Two Pianos And Orchestra No. 10 In E Flat Major, K365 (316a). Piano – Benjamin Britten (tracks: 7 to 9), Clifford Curzon, Daniel Barenboim (tracks: 1 to 3). Notes. Recording: Royal Albert Hall, London, 11 September 1979 (K365, K595) Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh, 23 June 1960 (K448).
Piano Concerto No. 27 in B flat major, K. 595: Allegro. 7. Sonata for 2 pianos in D major, K. 448 (K. 375a): Allegro con spirito. 8. 375a): Andante. 9. 375a): Molto Allegro. Audio CD (April 25, 2000). The balance that Curzon and Barenboim achieve is enviable. In the double concerto, Curzon's only version of it, the soloists are energetic and mostly articulate, but a noticable fluff/memory lapse occurs just before the entry of the second theme of the first movement. Best here is the second movement. The k448 Sonata for two pianos is mostly delightful. Curzon and Britten had then played together for almost twnty years. The finale almost runs away from them in their exuberance. Not preferable to a few studio performances but worth hearing.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat Major, K. 595. 1. Allegro. The brilliant pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim made a name for himself playing Mozart and Beethoven. In the 1980s and at the height of his artistic powers, Barenboim recorded Mozart’s last eight piano concertos with the magnificent Berliner Philharmoniker. These performances were staged in the neoclassical setting of Berlin’s Siemens-Villa, named for the celebrated music-lover and arts patron Ferdinand Werner Siemens
This was one of Curzon’s most salient attributes; for him the sound he made at the keyboard was paramount and it is his combination of cerebral interpretation, no doubt acquired in part from two years study with Artur Schnabel, coupled with his acute attention to sound, that made Curzon such a unique pianist. Listening to the first Impromptu one can hear that it is not just the beauty of sound that Curzon is concerned with, but the balance between the hands, parts and voices, and the way the harmony of the left hand supports Schubert’s glorious melodies. One of the highlights of the 1961 Edinburgh Festival was Curzon’s performance of Mozart’s last Piano Concerto, . 95 in B flat. He later travelled to London to perform the work again at the Proms and it is this performance that is heard on this CD.
