As a conductor, Heger was better known for his work in opera and made several famous opera recordings, including an abridged one of Der Rosenkavalier. Heger was born in Strasbourg, France, on August 19, 1886.

Recorded by Lotte Lehmann, Elisabeth Schumann, Maria Olszewska and Richard Mayer withy the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Robert Heger in 1933, these singers are all associated with the very earliest performances of Der Rosenkavalier in 1911 and are widely considered the definitive cast. Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose or The Rose-Bearer), Op. 59, is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from the novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas by Louvet de Couvrai and Molière's comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac. It was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Dresden on 26 January 1911 under the direction of Max Reinhardt, Ernst von Schuch conducting.
