Punk rock started in 1976 on New York’s Bowery, when four cretins from Queens came up with a mutant strain of blitzkrieg bubblegum. The revolution they inspired split the history of rock & roll in half. Dead Kennedys' debut LP is the ultimate hardcore comedy album, with singer Jello Biafra playing Johnny Rotten as goofball satirist on songs like "California Über Alles" and "Holiday in Cambodia. Fueled by the band's technically sharp guitarist, "East Bay" Ray Pepperell, Fresh Fruit also had more musical fire than contemporary efforts by similarly over-the-top hardcore shock-rockers like Fear or the Adolescents. Their first album explored obsessions like robotics, Ronald McDonald and cannibalistic apes, making devolution feel like the future. 38. White Lung, ‘Deep Fantasy’ (2014).
Punk Rock was never meant to live as long as it has. It was meant to die tragically young and leave a beautiful corpse behind. But as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sex Pistols scene-igniting debut album, it’s impossible not to look back in awe at how enduring, endearing and enlightening punk rock has been in the years since its first fervent fling in 1977. SUM 41 play their heavy-metal tinged pop-punk hits to a packed crowd in Kerrang!’s Brooklyn K! Pit. 5 STORIES.

Post-punk lyrics could be scathingly political or absurdly nonsensical. There was an anger to much of the music, but it was often masked by a playfulness. There’s significant overlap here with the New Wave movement, but you won’t find bands like Duran Duran or even Elvis Costello. There are early albums from U2, . If the Lisbon sisters of The Virgin Suicides grew up in late ’70s England, this is the music they would make.
And their album Suburbia is easily their best. It has a strong "Defend Pop Punk"-vibe that's real popular with the teens nowadays, but beneath that it's a really solid and expansive pop punk album. 31. Set Your Goals, Mutiny! jp. e. Mutiny! came out in 2006 and everyone kind of slept on it for about a year. As the American Pie phase of pop punk was burning off like toxic waste, a lot of bands were jockeying to be that new kind of sound. And then in 2004, Say Anything accidentally popped out this really inspired and interesting album full of snarling and gang vocals and interesting song structures. They even ended up soundtracking a few TV shows (like Scrubs LOL) and got that "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too" song on MTV. - .
