Listen just to Symphony No. 88's Menuetto and Trio - to the swaggering upbeat into big timpani downbeat in the Menuetto or the evocative woodwinds in the Trio with the strings swelling delightfully behind them. In every moment of these performances, Fischer and his musicians show that sort of attention to detail - and that kind of affection for idiom.

And good as the earlier performances were, the later performances - in this case, Symphonies No. 88 and No. 101 plus the Overture to the opera L'isola disabitata - are even better. Familiarity with the entire body of Haydn's orchestral works has bred only deeper understanding and greater fondness in these musicians and the thousands of small but telling improvements in their performances.

Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 88 & 101 - Adam Fischer. it jpc. Cecilia Bartoli - The Salieri Album. For those who know the Haydn symphonies well, I am sure it would be interesting to go and play a sequence of symphonic andantes and then adagios, and see who does distinguish between them, and who has been caught napping. Fischer can and does conduct with due gravitas, because his slow introductions have majesty to them, though the transition to the main body allegro does sound like horses out of the starting gates.

For the album by the Oregon Symphony, see Haydn Symphonies (album). There are 106 symphonies by the classical composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Hungarian conductor Ádám Fischer recorded a complete CD cycle in the late 1990s with the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra  . The last five of the 15-volume series were never released, although at least Nos. 76 and 77 were recorded and had a limited release on CD through BBC Music Magazine. Also, in 1990, another attempt at a complete Haydn cycle on period instruments began with the Hanover Band led from the keyboard by Roy Goodman for Hyperion Records.
