Mats Olof Gustafsson (born 29 October 1964) is a Swedish free jazz saxophone player. He is known for his tonal belligerence and intensity when improvising. Gustafsson came to the attention of lovers of improvised music as part of a duo with Christian Munthe (started in 1986), as member of Gunter Christmann's Vario project and the band Gush (started in 1988)

Self-taught free jazz heavyweight and self-confessed Discaholic Mats Gustafsson has one of the most fabled record collections in Europe. He produced Albert Ayler’s first record and played with Don Cherry, he made free improvised music on solo saxophone as early as 1962. He has a very tragic story, about how he grew up, but this guy inherited money from his aunt and he took all the money and invested it in a really good portable tape machine and started to record other people’s music and his own in his kitchen basically.

With percussionist Hamid Drake he recorded the untitled improvisations of For Don Cherry (october 1995). Xylophonen Virtuosen (september 1999) was a duo with guitarist Jim O'Rourke (and no xylophones). Port Huron Picnic (may 1999) was a trio with guitarist Kurt Newman and percussionist Mike Gennaro. Verses (march 2013) was the first duo album by Mats Gustafsson and Ken Vandermark. Vi Ar Alla Guds Slavar/ We Are All Slaves Under God (september 2012) documents a collaboration between Mats Gustafsson and Thurston Moore. The Thing returned with Boot! (february 2013) and Shake (june 2015). Fake The Facts, a trio with turntablist Dieb13 (aka Dieter Kovacic) and guitarist Martin Siewert, debuted with Fake The Facts (april 2011), containing the electronic, dissonant, 22-minute Zoom; followed by Soundtrack (january 2013).

Mats Gustafsson has been awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize for 2011. Jim O'Rourke Guests On Next Fire! Release. Mats Gustafsson 's Swedish three piece Fire! are teaming up with Jim O'Rourke for their second album Issue 248. October 2004. Current Issue 425. July 2019.
