On 2004's ARRIVING, however, Chris Tomlin sticks to the traditional CCM mold, offering up an album of modern, radio-ready pop that unabashedly and explicitly praises Jesus. Tomlin's take is often that of a wide-eyed innocent who is continually amazed by the scope and wisdom of the Lord's vision. His words of joy are matched with mostly up-tempo, relentlessly catchy tunes, delivered with soaring vocal harmonies and foot-tapping, le rhythms.

Arguably Chris Tomlin's best album to date, Arriving is today, 13 years later, as the day it was released. If anything, I appreciate this album more today than I did at the time. Arriving carries many of the Christian church's anthems that stuck around for so many years before slowly getting cycled out (I'm sure there are worship services that still heavily lean on several cuts from this album). The obvious "Indescribable" and "Holy Is The Lord" may have lead this album to sales dominance on CCM charts and even select mainstream radio but the substance lies in the thick of Arriving. "How Great Is Our God" still hits as hard today as it did in 2004. "On Our Side" is a fantastic touch of gospel with Tomlin's signature sound that carries a lot of that forward movement that, when done right, translates powerfully in a live setting. "All Bow Down" is signature post-Y2K CCM pop/rock with a good hook. "King of Glory" would easily be mistaken for a Third Day song if it weren't for Tomlin's less grungy voice. There's a lot to love on Arriving. There are other solid Chris Tomlin albums but Arriving is what truly got him on the map and has kept him there all this time.
