On November 21st the same label released the first RUINS 45rpm single "Short wave" (with "You're like a cigarette" as b-side). Both the Lp and the 45 single received a remarkable attention between indipendent and major record officials. During the 1981 a bunch of new songs were also recorded, but it seemed quite natural at the time trying to give the band a wider musical spectrum. Starting from early june of 1982 auditions for a possible new line up set were planned.
Ruins is the tenth studio album by Grouper, the stage name of American musician Liz Harris. It was released in the United States on October 31, 2014 on Kranky. In a statement accompanying the announcement of the album's release, Liz Harris described its recording process: While in Portugal, where she stayed in a house owned by the aunt of music director Sérgio Hydalgo, Harris listened to records by Carlos Paredes, Nina Simone and Leonard Cohen.
RUINS released their second EP a year after the first and doubled the length by upping the time length to over 20 minutes! They also changed up their sound quite a bit. This begins totally different as it has a mix of melodic bass lines that have a rather subdued effect although the drums are chomping at the bit for a major energy explosive release. After the short opening "Human Being" which belies their true nature, the appropriately titled "Entropy" unleashes the full RUINS effect with Kimoto Kazuyoshi abusing his bass and Tatsuya Yoshida going wild on his retrospective.
Ruins has a vivid sense of place. Harris recorded the album in 2011 during an artistic residency in Aljezur, Portugal-a tiny coastal town tucked inside a nature preserve on the southwestern corner of the country. In a press release, she describes the pleasures of recording simply, hiking to the beach, and getting lost in her head, working out "a lot of political anger and emotional garbag. he album is a document. A nod to that daily walk.
