Why is Richard Strauss deemed by many the greatest of 20th-century opera composers? Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned fan, this disc, with its scenes of often overwhelming beauty, illustrates some of the most salient reasons. To celebrate the 60th birthday of Andrew Lloyd Webber, this spectacular album brings together recordings made by the most sought-after classical artists, including José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Kiri Te Kanawa, and his own brother Julian Lloyd Webber. They perform highlights from Andrew Lloyd Webber's most beloved works, such as Evita, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Aspects of Love, and Sunset Boulevard.

Renee has an incredibly huge, controlled voice, which can be her biggest challenge. However, in this album, I did not detect ANY of that over-control or over-the-top "belting" tendency. She presented the pieces with beautiful, light agility that I have not seen in most of her other recordings.
Renée Fleming's voice, with its balanced blend of youthful luster and full-blossomed maturity, is ideally suited to Richard Strauss's music. Her recording of the composer's "Four Last Songs," with Christoph Eschenbach conducting, is among the best ever. Soprano and conductor are together again for this ravishing new album of scenes from Strauss's operas. Fleming imbues each of these three heroines with dignity, grace, and depth of character.
