Julian Siegel, the British t, is a virtuoso of turning up and making a difference, but he’s good at sustaining regular bands, too. His skilful nine-year-old quartet with brilliant pianist Liam Noble, bassist Oli Hayhurst, and expat American drummer Gene Calderazzo this month release their second album, Vista
Their 2011 album Urban Theme Park was widely praised for its improvising ambition, diverse sound worlds and smouldering virtuosity. He has a distinguished presence in jazz-rock in the form of the band Partisans, co-founded nearly 20 years ago with the guitarist Phil Robson, and also leads a trio with Joey Baron and Greg Cohen. He has performed alongside a stellar list of the international jazz elite, including Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell, Django Bates, Andrew Hill and Norma Winstone. JULIAN SIEGEL: I keep the music swinging, and keep connecting. It does come out with different influences and styles, but that’s not preconceived, it’s just the way it comes out. All the music I've got stored up in my head, all the bands I play with.

The interaction between Siegel’s buoyant melodies and Noble’s ever-shifting backdrops is at the heart of this quartet (which has changed its rhythm section since the first album in 2002, featuring Jeremy Brown and Gary Husband). No British pianist is more versatile than Noble – you’ll find him playing free improvisations one night and Carole King ballads the next – and he brings this stylistic breadth to Siegel’s compositions . Six Four opens the album with a multitracked Siegel playing soulful, feline tenor riffs, breaks down for a piano solo and then reintroduces more and more elements with the mathematical patience of classical minimalism.
