Boothroyd Idle Hours, released 30 September 2014 1. NYC 2. Skinned 3. Colony 4. Y5 With the release of his debut EP ‘Idle Hours’ Tri Angle is very excited to introduce Boothroyd, aka, 21 year old, Mancunian native Peter Boothroyd.
Boothroyd bookends the EP with its most aggressive tracks: though "NYC" boasts a delicately plucked melody reminiscent of labelmate Forest Swords, its kick drum dissolves into zeroes and ones at the end of each hit, and melancholy pianos are subsumed by sludgy beats. Later, on "Y5," Boothroyd trades that track's layered menace for an exercise in texture, dynamics, and structure as ghostly squeals and more crushing beats circle each other in a way that recalls the Haxan Cloak's Excavation.
Idle Hours, his debut EP, is a beguiling collection of sonic sketches that refuses to commit to any one genre in particular. Instead, it seems more content to choose a color: gray. Opener and lead single NYC acquaints you with his palette immediately; field recordings distorted beyond all hope of recognition bounce around a guitar sample that veers closer to washes of noise than melodic content. As the creator of the rather aggressive aesthetic of recent Evian Christ and RL Grime material, he takes a left turn here with a subtle piece that drapes gray material over the outline of a cityscape, fitting perfectly with the music. Boothroyd is working in a very strange space right now.
Idle Hours is a brilliant EP which shows Boothroyd’s confidence in his style and his skill in executing his vision. The EP was produced with a basic set up with what Peter Boothroyd described as "cheap, shitty headphones" but the end product has the same rough edged appeal as underground overlord Burial. Lead single and opening track 'NYC' is a dark and twisted echo chamber of breathy synths and a cutting guitar line.

New York's Tri Angle label continues to pluck its artists from the British Isles, the latest coming in the shape of the mysterious young producer Boothroyd. NYC' is a clattering racket of sounds, stringy synth lines offset and bolstered by crashing waves of sound and unexpected blasts of noise. Tracks come and go with beats and sounds seemingly unrelated, thickets of noise and blasts of sonic intrigue abounding, twisted groans lending terror and despair to the release's bizarre sound board.
