Cotton got the job for live work, though Chess Records still insisted on using Little Walter on record for some time to come. While some fans may expect that a sixties Blues Band album led by a singing harmonica player might lead to some similarity between tracks will get a very pleasant surprise as there is variety aplenty here. Just as there was fine light and shade on the earlier first five tracks, the full band album varied tremendously without any diminution of quality.

Cotton has played for many labels over his career, Vanguard being but one of those labels. This CD is basically a compilation of two excellent Vanguard recordings. Tracks 1 though 5 are from the album "Chicago/The Blues/Today Volume 2", which was recorded in 1966. Tracks 6 through 15 are from the album "Cut You Loose" which was recorded two years later in 1968. The bonus track, "Next Time You See Me" was previously unreleased. When listening to the CD you will notice two distinct styles

This is an terrific collection of blues. The marvelous "Negative 10-4" is a surprising jazz track, with heartfelt singing by Cotton. The rest of the album is Chicago blues. There are slower songs "The Blues Keep Falling" with piano by Otis Spann, and that is excellent of course. Cotton plays "Rocket 88" in a version that rivals Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner's version from Sun. It’s also noteworthy here that Cotton's voice here is expressive and powerful. It wouldn't always be so, but here it is great.
