"LOVELY RITA" RITA COOLIDGE-GREATEST HITS: After serving as a backing vocalist for Delaney and Bonnie, not to mention Joe Cocker's infamous Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour (band mate Leon Russell wrote Delta Lady in tribute to her), Rita Coolidge hit pay dirt as a solo artist in the mid seventies. Applying her smoky, sultry "after hours" pipes to a half tempo take on Jackie Wilson's Higher and Higher and a bluesy cover of the Temptations' The Way You Do the Things You Do, the half Cherokee also effortlessly made Boz Scaggs' best ballad We're All Alone all her own. In addition to that hat trick of smashes, this concise collection trots out the timeless staples Born Under a Bad Sign and Fever, which benefit from warmly solid interpretations, although her soaring James Bond theme All Time High and the slightly funky Top 40 single You are missing in action. For a quick peek into some of the finest middle of the road pop the seventies had to offer, one could do a lot worse than sample the even dozen excursions that make up Greatest Hits.RATING: FOUR BRUNETTES
